Top 10 Things to do in Helsinki harbour

Quirky architecture that merges modern design with Art Nouveau style and experiences rather than major sights (don’t expect Paris or Rome) is what Helsinki is really about.

This article focuses on the top 10 things to do in Helsinki, based on my own experiences here, to make your stay better.

I’ve visited Helsinki multiple times and compiled this recommended list for you.

Top 10 Things to do in Helsinki

I know I said that Helsinki is more about experiences than just sights, but there are a few here to check out.

And I couldn’t write a blog on the best things in Helsinki without starting with their iconic cathedral dominating the city skyline.

Helsinki Cathedral

Helsinki Cathedral is the main attraction at Senate Square. The first thing you notice is the green dome and the very neoclassical look.

This Evangelical Lutheran Cathedral was built in the 19th century when Finland was part of Russia. You can visit the cathedral for free, but it is more impressive from the outside, and it is the perfect backdrop for a nice photo.

Kiasma Contemporary Art Museum

Step into the future of art at the Kiasma Contemporary Art Museum, which focuses on modern art. This architectural marvel showcases contemporary Finnish and international art, pushing boundaries and challenging perceptions.

You may want to engage with interactive installations, thought-provoking exhibitions, and avant-garde performances.

I feel like this museum really adds a layer of what Helsinki is really about. Perfect on a rainy day. Check out their website for more information.

Temppeliaukio Church

Another incredible place you must visit in Helsinki is the genuinely remarkable Temppeliaukio Church, also called the Rock Church. It is a church carved into stone, and it’s just a 15-minute walk from central Helsinki.

The church is carved directly into solid rock and has a copper-lined dome that lets natural light in. It often holds concerts in the evening, so keep your eyes peeled for them!

The church entrance fee is 8 EUR; and the acoustics are really special. Don’t miss it. Buy your entrance ticket here.

Suomenlinna Sea Fortress

A Maritime Time Capsule Embark on a short ferry ride to the UNESCO-listed Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, an archipelago of interconnected islands representing centuries of Finnish history.

You can spend half of your day here, exploring the well-preserved fortifications, museums, and picturesque landscapes that make Suomenlinna so enjoyable.

You can book a round-trip ferry ticket from Helsinki to Suomenlinna or this return ferry ticket, which includes a one-hour guided walking tour of Suomenlinna.

Market Square and Old Market Hall

A Gastronomic Odyssey Indulge your taste buds in Helsinki’s culinary delights at Market Square, a bustling hub of local flavours.

Sample traditional Finnish delicacies like salmon soup, reindeer meat, and karjalanpiirakka (Karelian pasty) from the lively market stalls.

Next to the market is the Old Market Hall for a more curated gastronomic experience, where local vendors offer fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and other Nordic treats.

Helsinki Sauna Culture

A relaxing way to immerse yourself in the heart of Finnish culture is to partake in the very respected tradition of sauna bathing.

Helsinki boasts an array of public saunas, each offering a unique experience.

Unwind at Löyly, an architectural gem by the sea, or venture into the more traditional Kallio Sauna for an authentic Finnish sauna experience, complete with a refreshing dip in the Baltic Sea.

The Finns will tell you that they are the actual inventors of the sauna, although it is part of the culture in Sweden and Norway. Enjoy and recharge.

Sibelius Monument

Nestled within Sibelius Park, the Sibelius Monument pays homage to Finland’s renowned composer, Jean Sibelius.

Crafted by Eila Hiltunen, this remarkable sculpture embodies Sibelius’s music with its abstract, wave-like shapes.

As you approach, stainless steel pipes create a melodic display, symbolizing the harmonies of Sibelius’s compositions. The park around it is a nice place to relax and have a picnic.
