You\u2019ll need to obtain your Chinese visa before you travel, from your nearest Chinese embassy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tour operator will organise your permit for Tibet, which will most likely be sent to your hotel address in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you allow a few days to receive this (popular places will include Chengdu, Xian, Xining and Beijing). Our post about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.veryhungrynomads.com\/tourist-scams-in-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how to avoid common tourist scams in China<\/a>&nbsp;will be helpful to ensure you have the best time here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how-to-get-to-tibet\"><\/span>How to Get to Tibet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your tour operator will offer you two choices for starting your trip to Lhasa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Option 1:<\/strong> Overnight sleeper train \u2013 NOTE: Trains sell out quickly and are only available for purchase within 30 days of departure. &nbsp;They cannot be purchased directly from the Chinese railway, so you can use the agency you are booking your trip with or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinaticketonline.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">use this website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PROS<\/strong><em>:<\/em> This gives you time to acclimatise gradually.\u00a0 The train is very comfortable and new, a real engineering marvel as it travels through the peaks of 5000 m above sea level. \u00a0You can book either a soft sleeper or hard sleeper, or just a seat. \u00a0The journey starts from multiple cities \u2013 paying for at least a hard sleeper is recommended. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelchinaguide.com\/china-trains\/hard-soft-sleeper.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">See the difference here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CONS<\/strong>: The train is quite expensive (it costs more than the flight).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s long, taking anywhere from 24 &#8211; 36 hours, depending on where you start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Option 2<\/strong>: Fly from China to Lhasa. &nbsp;Multiple flights connect major cities in China with Lhasa (please note that there are no international flights apart from Kathmandu &#8211; KTM).&nbsp;Direct one-way flights include the same as above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/skyscanner.pxf.io\/21jQVM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skyscanner<\/a> offers the best flight deals online, so we recommend them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PROS:<\/strong> Quick, easy and quite affordable. We took the flight from Xian \u2013 The total cost was USD 135 pp<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CONS:<\/strong> Lhasa is 3656m above sea level\u2014altitude sickness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With both options, any tour operator will recommend that you take it easy on arrival in Lhasa so your body avoids altitude sickness. Symptoms tend to occur within hours after arrival at high altitude, including headache, nausea, shortness of breath, and inability to exercise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mild cases may resolve in one to three days. Severe cases may require oxygen, medications, and moving to a lower altitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Avoid High-Altitude Sickness?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Before Arriving in Tibet, take the below precautions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Keep physically and mentally healthy. Check the most current exchange rates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.awin1.com\/awclick.php?gid=345920&amp;mid=6311&amp;awinaffid=220931&amp;linkid=2241410&amp;clickref\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Language &#8211;<\/strong> Tibetan and Mandarin- It\u2019s recommended to learn a few phrases of Tibetan once you have arrived or ask your guide for some handy words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You\u2019ll need a VPN for wifi! &#8211;<\/strong> Download one before you arrive; you\u2019ll need it. We use and recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/surfshark.sjv.io\/c\/2208486\/1240796\/9043\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Surfshark VPN<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s surprising how many small restaurants and coffee places in Tibet offer free wifi. We saw so many beautiful landscapes, and the drives each day were stunning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"border-crossing-into-nepal\"><\/span>Border Crossing into Nepal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A passport photo is needed in advance for the visa. Make sure you have one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>USD 25 on arrival at the border (max 15-day stay). It\u2019s USD 40 for a 30-day stay. Pay in cash only.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your tour operator will allow you to take a private jeep transfer once you arrive on the Nepalese side. The cost depends on how many other travellers cross the border that day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We paid USD 50 for a seat in the jeep (4 pax max). We highly recommend arranging this option in advance as there aren\u2019t no transport options, except for big trucks, once you\u2019ve crossed into Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are multiple bag checks and security checkpoints once you\u2019ve crossed into Nepal, too, and your Nepalese driver will make this quick and easy for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The journey is 150km to Kathmandu; however, the roads are terrible. The journey takes approximately 8-10 hours, so be prepared. Your driver will probably stop along the way so you can have a meal and some fresh tea at a local eatery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many beautiful views on the way.
