Between its cosy streets, welcoming locals, and jaw-dropping landscapes just a short drive away, Ljubljana is full of charm, history, and adventure.

I’ve been guiding large tour groups around the best European cities for over a decade, and I love returning to Ljubljana; there’s something special about it.

Here are my top 11 things to do in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from its historic centre to many recommended day trips you can add to your stay.

11 Best Things to Do in Ljubljana Slovenia

1. Wander the Old Townā€™s Winding Streets

Ljubljanaā€™s Old Town is a picture-perfect area to begin your trip.

The streets are lined with pastel-coloured buildings, bustling outdoor cafes, and charming bridges. Get lost here ā€“ in the best way!

Each time I’ve returned here over the past ten years, more and more of the city has become pedestrianised, and the city centre is really thriving.

Youā€™ll stumble across little artisan shops, hidden courtyards, and locals chatting together at cafes.

Choose to sit along the river in the smaller alleyways and soak in the city’s vibes.

2. Climb up to Ljubljana Castle

Rising above the city, Ljubljana Castle offers unbeatable views of the whole city and the surrounding Julian Alps.

The walk-up to the castle is scenic and a pretty easy 15-minute uphill walk, though you can also take the funicular. Once you reach the top, tour the castleā€™s history, including climbing up the lookout tower for the best 360-degree panorama.

Tickets start at 12 euros per adult. Reserve your Castle entrance ticket here (which includes an optional funicular ride).

For a memorable experience, visit in the evening when the city lights upā€”you can even enjoy dinner in the castleā€™s restaurant, which has a medieval ambience!

3. Stroll Across Dragon Bridge

You can’t visit Ljubljana without crossing the iconic Dragon Bridge, guarded by its legendary dragon statues.

This bridge has become a symbol of the city, representing strength and courage.

Grab a photo with one of the dragons and then head along the river to PreÅ”eren Square to watch locals and tourists enjoy the vibrant energy of Ljubljanaā€™s central hub.

4. Take a River Cruise on the Ljubljanica

Gliding along the Ljubljanica River offers a fresh perspective on Ljubljanaā€™s enchanting skyline.

The riverbanks are packed with cafes and lush greenery, and many boats offer cosy, covered seating or even open decks on warmer days.

If you’re visiting during summer, catch a sunset cruise. It’s beautiful to watch the city transition from day to night as you float under its arched bridges.

TIP: You can find the boats along the river.

5. Explore Metelkova Mesto

Ljubljanaā€™s Metelkova Mesto is a former military barracks turned vibrant art and culture centre.

This alternative district is covered in colourful graffiti and installations, with bars, art galleries, and live music venues creating a unique vibe.

Itā€™s a hub for artists, musicians, and free spirits. Evenings here are electric, and youā€™ll find something new every time, from art shows to impromptu music jams.

6. Enjoy Nature in Tivoli Park

In the heart of the city, Tivoli Park is where locals go to unwind.

This sprawling green space has walking trails, lovely gardens, and plenty of places for a picnic.

Take a relaxing stroll through the Jakopič Promenade, which often has outdoor art exhibitions, or climb up to the Tivoli Castle.

Pack a lunch and enjoy the calm ā€“ a perfect way to recharge before diving back into the city.

7. Enjoy Local Dishes at many of Ljubljana’s Restaurants

Ljubljana is a food loverā€™s paradise, with a culinary scene that will amaze you. You may not know much about Slovenian cuisine, but trust me, you are in for a treat!

You must try local dishes like Kranjska Klobasa (Carniolan sausage), Å¾likrofi (dumplings filled with potatoes and herbs), hearty jota (a thick soup made with beans, sauerkraut, and potatoes), and the beloved Å”truklji (rolled dough filled with anything from cottage cheese to walnuts).

For an immersive experience, join this small group food tour that will take you through the city’s best eateries, markets, and hidden gems.

Your local guide will share stories of traditional Slovenian recipes, introduce you to specialty dishes, and explain how Ljubljanaā€™s food scene is evolving.

Itā€™s a perfect way to taste the soul of the city while getting to know its history and culture firsthand.

Plus, thereā€™s nothing better than a local guide pointing you toward their favourite Å”ljivovica (plum brandy) or hidden pastry shop!

8. Marvel at Jože Plečnikā€™s Architecture

One of the city’s unique traits is the extensive work of architect Jože Plečnik. He left his mark all over Ljubljana, including the famous Triple Bridge, the Central Market, and the National and University Library.

Each building reflects his unique style, blending modernist touches with traditional Slovenian aesthetics.

Take a walking tour focusing on Plečnikā€™s masterpieces to appreciate how much he shaped Ljubljanaā€™s look and feel.

I recommend this 5-hour guided Tour of the Works of Plečnik (tour also includes a river cruise).

BUY A CITY CARD – FREE entry to Ljubljana’s major museums & galleries, a city tour, a boat cruise, bicycle rental, and a funicular ticket to Ljubljana Castle.

9. Discover the Faces of Locksmith Street

Cutting through the cobblestoned Ključavničarska ulica, or ā€œLocksmith Street,ā€ is a gully filled with around 700 strange and theatrical bronze faces created by Slovenian sculptor Jakov Brdar.

These limbless casts are highly expressiveā€”some joyful, others crying, and some grotesquely distortedā€”bringing a mysterious yet captivating feel to the alley.

The faces lead up to a drinking fountain and a few other odd sculptures, like a bronze hand and a skeleton trapped in a cage, making this hidden corner of Ljubljana a surreal and unforgettable stop.

10. Day Trip to Lake Bled

No trip to Ljubljana is complete without a day trip to Lake Bled.

Just a 45-minute drive away, Lake Bled is an absolute fairytale with its clear blue waters, surrounded by mountains, and the charming Bled Island, which has a church at its centre.

We recommend this day trip from Ljubljana to visit Lake Bled and Bled Castle; it’s a best seller with excellent reviews.

Rent a rowboat or take a traditional ‘pletna’ boat to the island, where you can ring the church bell for good luck.

Donā€™t miss the Bled Cream Cake (similar to vanilla slice) at a lakeside cafe ā€“ itā€™s as delicious as it is famous.

A quick swim is a must in the summer, and in winter, the snowy scenery is magical.

11. Discover Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle

For a thrilling day trip, head to the incredible Postojna Cave, a 24,000-metre-long karst cave system with breathtaking rock formations.

The tour takes you deep into the cave on a small train, with guides sharing stories of the formations and underground wildlife.

Just a short drive from Postojna Cave is the stunning Predjama Castle, built into the mouth of a cave on a cliffside.

With its medieval roots and dramatic location, itā€™s an adventure into Sloveniaā€™s history that will leave you in awe.
