Ljubljana is a gem of a city. One of my favourite capital cities in all of Europe.

I’ve been lucky enough to visit this Slovenian capital many times, and each visit feels like uncovering new treasures.
Two days in Ljubljana is the perfect amount of time to see the best things in the city and head out of the town on a day trip to either Lake Bled or Postojna Cave.
Start your 2 days in Ljubljana at Prešeren Square, the lively main square named after Slovenia’s beloved poet, France Prešeren.
The square, surrounded by pastel-coloured baroque buildings, feels like something from a storybook.
Cross the Triple Bridge—an architectural wonder designed by Slovenia’s famed Jože Plečnik—that spans the Ljubljanica River in three graceful, sweeping arcs. As you stand on the bridge, you’ll see the winding riverside paths lined with cafes and shops, setting the tone for Ljubljana’s cosy, relaxed charm.
Next, make your way to Ljubljana Castle, perched on a hill above the city. The walk up is lovely, with views getting better as you climb, but the funicular ride offers a scenic shortcut if you prefer.
Once at the top, the castle grounds feel like stepping back in time.
The panoramic views of Ljubljana and the surrounding hills are nothing short of magical, and the castle itself is steeped in history, with a fascinating museum and exhibitions showcasing Slovenia’s past.
Don’t miss the climb to the Castle Tower, which offers even more spectacular views of the red rooftops below and, on a clear day, the distant peaks of the Julian Alps.
You can pre-purchase the ticket here or if you prefer to have a more rounded experience, why not book this guided tour.
Either way, visiting the castle is one of the must do’s during your 2 days in Ljubljana.
Descend back to the Old Town to visit St. Nicholas Cathedral with its striking green dome and baroque interior.
The bronze doors named the Slovene Door are a work of art. Added only in 1996 to door celebrates the coinciding 1,250th anniversary of Christianity in Slovenia and a visit by Pope John Paul II.
The door tells a story of Slovenia, you’ll find Crusaders, the creation of Yugoslavia to the modern state of Slovenia.
Wander over to Ljubljana’s Central Market, (just around the corner from the Cathedral) a bustling hub of local life where farmers and artisans from across Slovenia gather to sell their goods. The vibrant stalls overflow with fresh produce, handmade crafts, cheeses, and honey—a feast for the senses.
Take your time exploring and sample some seasonal fruits or Slovenian delicacies like dried meats or potica, a delicious rolled pastry.
This market captures the essence of Ljubljana: vibrant, down-to-earth, and deeply connected to its roots.
Here you can also find unusual vending machines, selling fresh milk or fresh cheeses—another thing I love about Ljubljana.
You can definitely eat and snack your way around the market and if not I have my favourite restaurant for you to eat at.
Head to Gostilna Sokol for an authentic Slovenian lunch that’s as hearty as it is flavourful. Just a short stroll from the market, Sokol is a traditional Slovenian inn with a rustic, warm ambience—think wooden beams, folk decor, and a menu filled with delicious Slovenian dishes.
Read more about the 10 most popular Slovenian foods so you can order a classic meal.
Often dressed in folk costumes, the servers enhance the old-world charm, making you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
Try the rich jota (a sauerkraut and bean stew) or the famed kranjska klobasa (Carniolan sausage), served with a side of mustard and sauerkraut. If you’re in the mood for something heartier, go for the venison goulash or a generous plate of štruklji—traditional rolled dumplings filled with cottage cheese.
Make sure you try to eat here at least once during your 2 days in Ljubljana.
After lunch, cross the Dragon Bridge, one of the city’s most iconic spots. The statues of dragons—Ljubljana’s symbol—stand guard, adding a touch of mystique to the scene. Perfect for a dragon selfie.
Nearby, Cobbler’s Bridge offers a quieter, equally charming crossing, framed by columns and with lovely views up and down the river.
For a taste of Ljubljana’s artistic side, make your way to Metelkova Art Centre. This alternative cultural hub, located in what was once a military barracks, has been transformed into a vibrant community of artists, activists, and musicians.
The walls are covered in colourful graffiti and murals, creating a unique, eclectic atmosphere. Metelkova is a true reflection of Ljubljana’s creative, open-minded spirit and is worth a visit even if you’re just exploring on your own.
Wrap up your afternoon with a stop at Renaissance Specialty Coffee for a strong espresso or Lolita an elegant café with views of the river. The desserts here are divine—try the Ljubljana cake or one of their seasonal creations, paired with a coffee or tea.
For a fancy dinner, go to Gostilna Na Gradu (or if you haven’t tried Gostina Sokol for lunch, go there), located within Ljubljana Castle’s grounds. The ambience is warm and inviting, blending modern Slovenian cuisine with traditional flavours.
The menu is full of locally sourced ingredients, showcasing the best of the region with dishes like Carniolan sausage and seasonal vegetables. Dining here feels like an extension of the day’s experiences: rooted in history, crafted with care, and undeniably special. Reservations are recommended.
After dinner, take a peaceful stroll along the Ljubljanica River, admiring the reflections of the illuminated buildings and bridges in the water.
This serene nighttime walk will be a beautiful way to end your first day in Ljubljana.

For the second day of your 2 days in Ljubljana, take a day trip to one of Slovenia’s most famous natural attractions.
Both Lake Bled and Postojna Cave are close to Ljubljana and offer a completely different experience, making either a perfect choice.
Only an hour from Ljubljana, Lake Bled is a place of true magic. With its famous island church, the emerald-green lake is surrounded by forested mountains and crowned by the medieval Bled Castle perched high on a cliff.
Take a traditional pletna boat to Bled Island. Rowers guide you across the lake in these charming wooden boats, a tradition dating back centuries. Once on the island, climb the steps to the Assumption of Maria Church, where you can ring the church bell—a gesture believed to bring good luck.
Or if you prefer you can walk around the entire lake.
After your island visit, stroll along the lakeshore or relax at a lakeside café, where you must try the famous Bled Cream Cake. This fluffy, custard-filled delight is synonymous with Bled and the perfect way to end your trip before returning to Ljubljana.
Alternatively, you can book this guided tour to Lake Bled & Bled Castle from Ljubljana or this day trip to visit Lake Bled & Postojna Cave.
For those drawn to natural wonders, Postojna Cave is a remarkable choice. This sprawling cave system, carved by the Pivka River, is one of Europe’s most extensive and awe-inspiring underground networks.
The guided tour here takes you deep into the earth, winding through chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and intricate rock formations.
You’ll also have a chance to glimpse the olm, a rare, blind amphibian found only in this region.
You can self-drive here and purchase tickets on their official website or join a tour from Ljubljana. Book this top-rated tour here.
Just a short drive from Postojna Cave is Predjama Castle, a cliffside fortress with a fascinating history.
The castle is partially built into the rock face, creating an unforgettable sight and an impressive feat of medieval engineering. Wander through the castle’s rooms, and learn about the legendary knight Erasmus, who once defied an imperial siege from within these walls.
If you are driving here with your own car or rental vehicle then you can buy tickets for Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle directly here on the official website here.
Back in Ljubljana, your 2 days in Ljubljana come to end.
Finish your day with dinner at Špajza in the Old Town. This cosy restaurant offers an inviting ambiance, where you can indulge in traditional dishes like wild game, seafood, or seasonal Slovenian specialties.
Pair your meal with a glass of Slovenian wine, and take a moment to reflect on the experiences of the past two days.
Whether you explore the enchanting Lake Bled or the mysterious depths of Postojna Cave, you’ll return to Ljubljana with a deeper appreciation of Slovenia’s beauty as you get to see a lot of the countryside.
Ljubljana is a year-round destination with four distinct seasons:
Spring (April to June) breathes life into the city’s parks and gardens. The mild weather, with average temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F), is perfect for leisurely strolls along the Ljubljanica River or exploring the charming Old Town without the summer crowds.
Summer (July to August) brings a lively energy, as outdoor cafes buzz with locals and visitors alike, and numerous festivals fill the calendar. The long, sunny days, with temperatures averaging between 20°C and 30°C (68°F to 86°F), are ideal for enjoying boat rides on the river or picnicking in Tivoli Park.
Autumn (September to November) cloaks Ljubljana in warm hues of orange and gold, creating a picturesque backdrop for cultural events and cosy evenings in traditional restaurants. Average temperatures gradually drop from around 18°C (64°F) in September to 5°C (41°F) in November, making it the perfect season to enjoy the city’s beauty as it transitions toward winter.
Winter (December to March) transforms the city into a magical wonderland, especially during the festive holiday season when Christmas markets sparkle with lights and seasonal treats. With average temperatures between -2°C and 5°C (28°F to 41°F), the crisp, chilly air adds to the charm of wandering through Ljubljana’s decorated streets, often dusted with snow, creating a scene straight out of a fairytale.
Ljubljana’s compact, walkable layout offers many convenient accommodation options just a short stroll from all the main sights.
For a blend of comfort and style, Grand Hotel Union provides classic charm close to the Old Town, with spacious rooms and excellent amenities.
B&B Hotel Ljubljana Park is a great choice for budget-conscious travellers, offering cosy rooms near Tivoli Park.
For those seeking luxury, Ljubljana’s InterContinental Hotel provides a refined five-star experience with a rooftop terrace and sweeping city views.
Ljubljana is a culinary delight, and finding traditional Slovenian dishes infused with modern twists is easy.
Start your gastronomic journey with štruklji, delightful rolled dumplings filled with savoury ingredients like cottage cheese, walnuts, or spinach.
For a hearty meal, indulge in kranjska klobasa (Carniolan sausage), best enjoyed grilled and served with mustard and freshly baked bread.
Don’t miss out on jota, a comforting stew made from sauerkraut, beans, and smoked pork, perfect for warming up on a cool day.
