The Perfect 2 Days in Copenhagen

Copenhagen is the kind of city that effortlessly blends charm with ultra-modern cool. It ranks as one of the top cities with the happiest people in the world, and out of the four Nordic Capitals, Copenhagen is a city I would describe as cosy. Each time I visit Copenhagen, I always discover something new.

This 2 days in Copenhagen itinerary is based on my own experience here.

I have visited the city multiple times over the years as I work as a tour leader during European summers. Plus, Rach and I (the duo behind this website, Very Hungry Nomads) had plenty of time to explore here on our own and also be shown around by a friend who lives here.

2 Days in Copenhagen Itinerary - Marty and Rach At Nyhavn
All smiles during our two days in Copenhagen. Nyhavn Harbour

So let’s dive into this detailed itinerary for 2 days in Copenhagen. With colourful harbours, royal palaces, cosy cafés, and sleek Scandi design, this city is easy to love.

Maybe you’re stopping by on a Nordic adventure that will take you to multiple countries (stay tuned for helpful blogs on visiting Oslo, Stockholm, and Helsinki) or planning a weekend getaway.

This 2-day Copenhagen itinerary will show you the very best Copenhagen has to offer, with time for smørrebrød, scenic walks, and yes, the famous Little Mermaid.

Quick Tips Before You Go

  • Currency: Danish Krone (DKK)
  • Language: Danish (but nearly everyone speaks excellent English)
  • Getting Around: Super bike-friendly, but walking and metro work well too. The Copenhagen Card includes public transport and entry to many attractions, and it can be of great value if you use it correctly.
  • When to Visit: May to September for the best weather; December if you want to experience hygge-filled Christmas markets, but be prepared for a short day and cold weather.
  • Tickets and Tours: You can book entry tickets and tours here. It saves you time and guarantees your entry.
  • Copenhagen Card: If you love visiting multiple sights, especially museums, this card can be a great money saver as it also includes public transport. More info is at the bottom of the blog.

2 Days in Copenhagen Itinerary:

Day 1 of 2 Days in Copenhagen Itinerary: Nyhavn & Palaces & The Little Mermaid

Morning: Start With a Copenhagen Icon – Nyhavn

There is no better way to start your first day in Copenhagen than with the postcard-perfect harbour Nyhavn, lined with colourful 17th-century buildings.

Originally a commercial port, it’s now filled with cafes, restaurants, and bobbing boats. Hans Christian Andersen, Denmark’s cherished fairy tale author, lived here for years. Apparently, at three different addresses! You can see a plaque mentioning him at numbers 18 and 20. There is now a souvenir shop here.

You can grab your morning coffee from one of the harborside cafes and soak up the early vibe. If you’re into photography, morning time is ideal to capture the best shots before the crowds arrive. The iconic photos of the harbour can be taken from the bridge Nyhavnsbroen.

Nyhaven gets quite busy around lunchtime and then, of course, at dinner.

We will return to Nyhavn in the evening with this Copenhagen Itinerary to experience a canal cruise. You can easily book this Canal Cruise here. More info is found further below.

Changing of the Guards at Amalienborg Palace

Just a short walk from Nyhavn is Amalienborg Palace, also the official home of the Danish royal family.

Passing through the archway, you’ll see Queen Margrethe II’s residence on your right. The mansion with the clock tower is home to King Frederik X and Queen Mary.

If a flag is flying above the building, it means a member of the royal family is currently home, though they typically stay here during the winter, as they have a summer residence in Bornholm.

At the centre of the courtyard stands the striking equestrian statue of King Frederik V, often hailed as one of the most impressive equestrian statues in the world.

2 Days in Copenhagen Itinerary - Amelionberg Square
Amalienborg Palace

The square is surrounded by four elegant buildings and guarded by royal guards who wear these big fuzzy hats. We loved their outfits!

Time your visit for noon to catch the Changing of the Guard ceremony. It’s a bit of a show that adds royal flair to your morning, and I think it’s a must-do during your two days in Copenhagen.

2 Days in Copenhagen Itinerary - Changing of the guards

Once the changing of the guard is finished, walk right next door into Frederik’s Church, also called The Marble Church. The church is free to enter, and you can admire its majestic dome.

When you step inside and look up, you realise how big it is. It’s one of the largest in Europe.

Lunch at Torvehallerne: Smørrebrød Time!

Your visit to Copenhagen wouldn’t be complete without trying their famous Smørrebrød – the Danish open-faced sandwich.

For lunch, head to Torvehallerne location pin, a modern food market near Nørreport Station. This glass-walled hall is a food lover’s dream, offering everything from fresh oysters to craft coffee.

There are so many options, but I highly recommend ordering smørrebrød. We came here precisely for that, and they were simply divine.

2 Days in Copenhagen Itinerary - Torvehallerne open sandwiches
Smørrebrød ( open faced sandwiches) at Torvehallerne

Try a classic combo like herring with red onion and capers, or roast beef with crispy onions and remoulade. There are just so many choices!

You can pair it with Danish elderflower soda for the whole experience or have an excellent coffee at Coffee Collective.

Afternoon: Botanical Garden Escape & A Visit to the Little Mermaid

After lunch at Torvehallerne, take a short stroll to the Botanical Garden, a peaceful green oasis in the city’s heart. I came here last time when I stayed in Copenhagen for 2 days, a friend who is studying in Copenhagen brought me here.

Run by the University of Copenhagen, this sprawling garden is home to over 13,000 species of plants from all around the world. It is free to enter; you only pay an entrance fee to the Palm House.

The historic cast-iron Palm House from the 19th century is a highlight, especially if you love exotic greenery and Victorian-era architecture. It’s the perfect spot to walk off lunch or relax in nature. We loved the peaceful vibes here.

2 Days in Copenhagen Itinerary - Botanical Gardens
The Palm House in the Botanical Gardens of Copenhagen

Next, head toward one of Copenhagen’s most iconic figured: The Little Mermaid. From the Botanical Garden, you can walk (about 30 mins), rent a bike, or hop on a bus.

On the way, consider walking through Kastellet, one of Northern Europe’s best-preserved star-shaped fortresses, with grassy ramparts and a lovely windmill. You will see it for sure as you walk right past it.

Then, there she is: the Little Mermaid, sitting quietly on her rock by the harbour, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved tale.

2 Days in Copenhagen Itinerary - Little Mermaid and Marty and Rach
Posing in front of the Little Mermaid

I guess the first thought you might have it, how small she is. Though petite, she has become a symbol of the city, and despite her small size, she draws visitors from around the world.

Expect a bit of a crowd, but don’t worry, there’s plenty of space nearby to admire the views across the water or pick up a snack from a nearby cart.

Or maybe have fun with posing and recreate your own version of The Little Mermaid.

Optional Stop: Rosenborg Castle & The King’s Garden

If you have time and energy, detour back toward Rosenborg Castle. It houses the Danish crown jewels and sits inside Kongens Have (The King’s Garden). You can purchase your ticket to enter Rosenborg Castle here.

Evening: Canal Cruise & Dinner

As the sun begins to dip, it’s time for a canal cruise from Nyhavn or Gammel Strand. The one-hour ride will take you through Copenhagen’s waterways, past landmarks like the Opera House, Christianshavn, and the Black Diamond Library.

It’s a relaxing and beautiful way to see the city from another perspective.

2 Days in Copenhagen Itinerary - cruise canal
The canal cruise is a must-do during your 2 days in Copenhagen

Wrap up your evening with dinner nearby. For traditional Danish fare, try Restaurant Puk or Det Lille Apotek

Check out Høst, a stylish Nordic restaurant with a seasonal tasting menu for something more modern and classy.

If you are looking for a budget option, check out Broands Street Food. It’s an outdoor space featuring a range of global street food stands.

And for something hip and affordable (by Copenhagen standards), try a burger from Gasoline Grill, one of the city’s most beloved burger joints. What started in a tiny converted gas station new Kongens Nytorv has exploded in popularity. The original location has a cool retro charm, but you’ll also find outlets near Nørreport and Tivoli if that’s more convenient.

Day 2 of 2 days in Copenhagen Itinerary: Trendy Districts, Street Food & Tivoli Magic

Morning: Coffee & Climbing the Church of Our Saviour

Start your second day strolling down the main street of Stroget in downtown Copenhagen and enjoy a cup of coffee at The Coffee Collective BernikowThis place is an institution, so if you love good coffee, you’ll enjoy it.

You can then walk past the beautiful Christiansborg Slot. Once home to kings and queens, it now houses the Danish Parliament and the Supreme Court. You will then see the former old stock exchange, Borsen, topped with four entwined dragon tails.

2 Days in Copenhagen Itinerar - Borsen and Christiansborg
The cool roof of Borsen (Stock Exchange) and Christiansborg Palace

Cross the bridge to Christianshavn, a charming canal-lined neighbourhood inspired by Amsterdam. One of my favourite things to do in Copenhagen is climbing the corkscrew spire of the Church of Our Saviour.

Once you reach the top, you will have incredible city views. However, this might not suit you if you’re afraid of heights. Or don’t look straight down.

Midday: Explore Christianshavn & Freetown Christiania

From here, head to Freetown Christiania, a self-proclaimed autonomous neighbourhood with its own rules and atmosphere.

Known for its colourful murals and alternative culture, it’s unlike anywhere else in Europe. Think of it as a little community of free spirits.

Please remember to be respectful when visiting and avoid taking photos in some areas; there are signs.

Lunch at Reffen or Street Food Options

If you’re visiting during the warmer summer months, head to Reffen Street Food Market by the harbour. It’s a decent walk from Christiania, so you might need to take a bus. The market is a collection of food trucks and stalls offering global eats, local beer, and views across the water.

2 Days in Copenhagen Itinerary - Torvehallerne smorgasbord
Open faced sandwiches again!

Alternatively, walk up to Broens Street Food for closer options and some excellent food.

Afternoon & Evening: Tivoli Gardens – Copenhagen’s Fairytale Park

Dedicate your afternoon and evening to Tivoli Gardens, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world (opened in 1843). Walt Disney even visited Tivoli before designing Disneyland; you can feel the magic as you enter. I suggest you purchase tickets beforehand to avoid lines.

Choose from a standard entrance ticket or an entrance ticket with unlimited rides!

After entering the park, you’ll find beautifully landscaped gardens, vintage rides, pantomime shows, and pavilions. It kind of feels like a cosy amusement park.

Don’t miss the wooden roller coaster (built in 1914 and still running!) and the Tivoli Illuminations light show at night.

There are plenty of dining options inside Tivoli, from elegant restaurants to casual snack bars, so you can also dine here. Try to stay until sunset, when the whole park twinkles with fairy lights. Pure hygge. As they say, when in Copenhagen. It’s also the perfect and magical way to finish your 2 days in Copenhagen.

Note: ‘Hygge’ is a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that brings a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).

Don’t miss out on Tivoli Gardens during your 2 days in Copenhagen

What Is the Copenhagen Card and Is It Worth It?

The Copenhagen Card is an all-in-one city pass that gives you free entry to over 80 attractions and museums, including top sights like Tivoli Gardens, Rosenborg Castle, and the Canal tour.

It also includes unlimited public transportation within the city and surrounding zones (including to and from the airport). As of 2025, the prices are:

  • 24 hours: 479 DKK (~€64 / ~$69)
  • 48 hours: 709 DKK (~€94 / ~$102)
  • 72 hours: 889 DKK (~€118 / ~$128)

Whether it’s worth it depends on how much you plan to see and do.

If you visit several paid attractions like Tivoli, the Church of Our Saviour tower, the National Museum, and Rosenborg Castle, plus take public transport a few times, it can actually save you money. It’s also incredibly convenient; you don’t have to keep buying tickets or worry about transport zones.

Bonus: there’s even a Copenhagen Card app to activate and manage everything on your phone!

How Many Days Do You Need in Copenhagen?

Copenhagen is a compact, walkable city that packs a lot of charm, culture, and history into its neighbourhoods. You don’t need weeks to experience the magic.

Two days in Copenhagen is the perfect amount of time for a first visit. With 48 hours, you can explore the city’s must-see sights like Nyhavn, The Little Mermaid, Tivoli Gardens, Rosenborg Castle, and even squeeze in some relaxing moments by the canals or gardens. This Copenhagen itinerary proves that 2 days is enough.

You’ll get a great taste of Danish design, food, and that famously cosy “hygge” vibe without feeling rushed.

Of course, if you have more time, plenty will keep you entertained, but 2 days is just right to fall in love with Copenhagen.
