2 Days In Belgrade Itinerary

Belgrade, Serbia’s capital, is a city that surprises and captivates those who take the time to explore it.

Often overlooked in favour of more famous European destinations, Belgrade is different, but it has energy that deserves attention.

While its vibrant nightlife has earned it a reputation as a party hotspot, Belgrade is so much more.

From its pedestrian streets and cafe culture to world-class museums and historic landmarks, the city offers an exciting blend of old and new; just perfect for a short, immersive visit.

2 Days in Belgrade might be all you need to get a taste of this city.

Practical Tips for Visiting Belgrade

  • Arrival: Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport is the main gateway to the city, with easy connections via taxi, ride-sharing app Bolt/Uber, airport bus to city transfer, or book a private car transfer ahead of time. Multiple bus services and even international train connections connect Belgrade.
  • Currency and Payments:Ā Serbia uses the Serbian dinar (RSD), and cash is commonly used. Credit cards are accepted in most places, but carrying small amounts of money in cash for taxis and smaller establishments is a good idea. If you haven’t already got one, I recommend you sign up for a WISE international bank account. If you travel frequently, this account will save you a lot of money in the long run.
  • Serbia is not in the EU: While Serbia is a candidate for EU membership, it is not yet part of the European Union. Make sure to check visa requirements if applicable. Also, if you’re travelling to other cities such as Bucharest, Sarajevo, or Vienna, you must go through a proper border crossing.
  • Smoking: Smoking is still widely permitted in indoor public spaces, including many restaurants and cafes. The locals love it so just be prepared that a night out means a lot of smoking around you.
  • Safety: Belgrade is generally safe, but as with any major city, stay vigilant in crowded areas and keep an eye on your belongings. A friend of mine has been pickpocketed at sunset near the Save River in the crowds of tourists. It’s worth reading our 12 essential tips for safe travel.
  • Local Etiquette: Serbians are known for their hospitality, so don’t hesitate to ask for help or recommendations. Learning a few basic Serbian phrases is always welcome, and don’t be surprised if the locals come across as very direct when speaking. That’s just how it is.
  • Tipping: Tipping is customary in restaurants and cafes, with 10-15% being the standard.
  • Connectivity: Free wifi is widely available in cafes, restaurants, and public spaces, making it easy to stay connected. For phone data, I recommend buying an eSIM for Serbia or a regional eSIM that keeps you connected across 41 European countries. More info here

2 Days in Belgrade Itinerary

Day 1: Exploring the Heart of Belgrade

Morning: Kalemegdan Fortress and Belgrade’s Old Town

The first day is spent in the city centre, exploring the main sights.

While you can certainly do so alone, I highly recommend joining this guided walking tour this morning to get a better perspective and background on Belgrade as a cityĀ andĀ Serbia as a nation.

Start your day at Kalemegdan Fortress, one of Belgrade’s most iconic landmarks.

Perched on a hill overlooking the confluence of the Sava and Danube Rivers, the fortress has plenty of history, dating back to Roman times. This is really where the city’s history starts from.

Stroll through the expansive Kalemegdan Park, check out the ancient walls, and visit the Victor Monument, a symbol of Belgrade.

It’s also a nice spot to watch the sun go down in the evening.

If you would like to learn more about Serbia’s military history, you could visit the Military Museum.

Personally, I prefer two other museums which I recommend visiting on the second day of your 2 days in Belgrade itinerary; so skip ahead to Day 2 to find out more on these museums.

From Kalemegdan, wander into Knez Mihailova Street, Belgrade’s main pedestrian thoroughfare.

This bustling street is lined with shops, cafes, and historic buildings, making it the perfect spot for an easy stroll and some people-watching. This is also where you can pick up some souvenirs, and there is a flea market in one of the courtyards.

This is the perfect spot to grab a coffee, something the locals love to do.

I encourage you to look up at the buildings; here, you will see some of the city’s best art nouveau and baroque gems.

Lunch: Traditional Serbian Cuisine

For lunch, headĀ toĀ Znak Pitanja(Question Mark Tavern), the oldest traditional restaurant in Belgrade.

This charming ā€œkafanaā€ serves hearty Serbian dishes like sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls) and pljeskavica (Serbian-style burgers) in an authentic setting.

Try to eat here at least once during your two days in Belgrade. It is one of my favourite places to eat.

Afternoon: Republic Square and National Museum

After lunch, go toĀ Republic Square, Belgrade’s cultural and historical heart.

Here, you’ll find the impressive National Museum of Serbia, home to a huge collection of art and artefacts spanning prehistoric times to modern-day Serbia. Highlights include works by international and Serbian artists, and fascinating archaeological exhibits.

Not far from Republic Square is the famous Hotel Moscow, one of the oldest hotels in the country. The facade is decorated with emerald ceramic tiles. It also has a beautiful cafe well known for its cakes.

Evening: Skadarlija Bohemian Quarter

As the sun sets, immerse yourself in the bohemian charm of Skadarlija, Belgrade’s old bohemian quarter.

This cobblestone street is lined with vibrant restaurants and taverns, many featuring live traditional music. Enjoy a hearty Serbian dinner paired with rakija (fruit brandy) while soaking in the lively atmosphere.

Day 2: Modern Belgrade and Riverside Relaxation

Morning: St. Sava Church

Kick off your second day of your two-day Belgrade Itinerary with a visit toĀ St. Sava Church, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.

This stunning architectural masterpiece, dedicated to Saint Sava,Ā is a symbol ofĀ Serbian spirituality and culture.

Explore its impressive interior, adorned with intricate mosaics, and take a moment to reflectĀ onĀ this serene space.Ā

The church does have a dress code (no uncovered knees or shoulders), althoughĀ most locals wearĀ shorts, especially during the hot days of summer.

Get Connected with eSIM

Get connected easily on your travels—buy an eSIM! It works like an app: buy it, download it, and get connected in minutes! It’s easy, affordable, and convenient. Keep your original phone number, too!

Mid-Morning: House of Flowers (Tito Museum)

After visiting St. Sava Church, head to theĀ House of Flowers which is part of the Museum of Yugoslavia, the final resting place of Josip Broz Tito, the former president of Yugoslavia.Ā

This museum offers a glimpse into Tito’s life and legacy andĀ artefacts from the socialist era.

2 days in Belgrade Itinerary - Museum of Yugoslavia

While IĀ once took a guided tour with an excellent guide here, I still believe visiting this place is a unique experience.

If you are in Belgrade on a Saturday,Ā email the museum to book the 11Ā amĀ English-guided tour. All information can be found on the official website.

The main mausoleum, where Tito’s body is buried, is set among beautiful gardens. Inside the building, you’ll find a lot of information about his life andĀ many photographs.

The museum is closed on Mondays, and an entry ticket costs 600 RSD (around $5).

Afternoon: Nikola Tesla Museum

After lunch, dedicate your afternoon to the Nikola Tesla Museum, a must-visit for science and history enthusiasts.

This museum celebrates the life and work of Nikola Tesla, one of history’s greatest inventors and scientists.Ā

The museum is small, and there are plans to move it to a much larger building in the coming years. Entry is allowed only with a guided tour that starts on top of every hour, so book your ticketĀ online and then come to the museum 15-20 minutes before.

The ticket includes a presentation given by one of the staff after a video explaining Tesla’s life is shown. It is quite interactive, and you, as a visitor, will get a chance to participate in some experiments.

The museum is open every day; the entry ticket is 800 RSD. All information and booking can be found on the official website.

Then, you can explore the fascinating exhibits, including Tesla’s original documents, photographs, and working models of his inventions.Ā
