10 Days in Sri Lanka Travel Itinerary map

This 10 days in Sri Lanka Travel Itinerary is based on my own travels around Sri Lanka.

I first visited Sri Lanka as an emerging travel destination a decade ago and recently revisited to witness its transformation.

Over the years, the island has become more accessible, with improved infrastructure and a growing focus on tourism. Yet, it has retained its charm, making it a must-visit destination in 2025 and beyond.

Sri Lanka’s compact size makes it ideal for a 10-day itinerary, allowing you to see all the main highlights.

Of course, you could also add a visit to Yala National Park or a trip up to Jaffna to go somewhere off the beaten path. But you would need at least 14 days in that case.

With scenic train rides, exotic wildlife, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Sri Lanka really is the full package.

Let’s dive into the perfect 10-day itinerary that covers the island’s highlights!

Tips to Know Before You Go – Sri Lanka Travel Itinerary

Best Time to Visit

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate with distinct monsoon seasons, so the best time to visit depends on where you’re headed, but for the best places in Sri Lanka (and what is covered in this blog), I recommend visiting between December to March/April.

  • Southwest Coast (Colombo, Galle, Weligama): December to March.
  • Central Highlands (Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy): December to April.
  • East Coast: April to September.

Visa Requirements

Most travellers require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter Sri Lanka and you can apply online.

It’s straightforward and typically processed within 24-48 hours. Your passport will be stamped at the airport (there is no visa sticker, just a stamp).

Here is the official ETA website to apply for your Sri Lankan visa.

Currency

The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Credit cards are widely accepted in tourist areas, but it’s good to carry cash for smaller towns and markets.

You can change money immediately upon arrival at the airport; the rate is set, and if you keep your receipt, you can exchange the leftovers for another hard currency before you fly out.

Food

Sri Lankan food is an explosion of flavours and spices; it’s no wonder it’s often referred to as ‘the Spice Island’.

Known for its bold and vibrant dishes, Sri Lankan cuisine includes fragrant rice dishes like biryani and kottu to fiery curries bursting with coconut milk, chilli peppers, and aromatic spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves; each mouthful is a sensory journey through this tropical paradise.

My favourite thing about this cuisine is how they get so much flavour into the tropical fruit and vegetable curries; they’re heavenly. If you find banana or eggplant curry on the menu, order it; you won’t be disappointed!

Here is a detailed blog on where to find the best food in Sri Lanka.

Customs and Etiquette

  • Dress modestly when visiting temples—cover shoulders and knees.
  • Remove shoes and hats before entering sacred sites.
  • Avoid public displays of affection as they are considered unusual.

Transport on your Sri Lanka Travel Itinerary

Trains: Sri Lanka’s trains are an experience in themselves. Reserved seating (first or second class) ensures comfort, while unreserved tickets allow more flexibility but can be crowded.

For a more exclusive experience, consider private luxury trains like the Rajadhani Express or ExpoRail on certain routes. Tickets for reserved seating should be booked in advance at stations or online and the same goes for the private trains.

You can book trains on 12Go website or the official Sri Lankan Railway website: www.railway.gov.lk

Please note: If it says the train is full, it means that the reserved seats are sold out, but you can still purchase tickets without reserved seating at the station.

Ride-Sharing Apps: Download the Uber and PickMe apps for affordable and reliable rides in major cities. These apps also offer tuk-tuk services, which I love.

Tuk-Tuks: Great for short distances. Always agree on a fare beforehand if not using a meter.

Private Drivers: Convenient for long distances and tailored schedules. Sometimes, it can give you much freedom to organise a private ride as you can stop along the route. Reserve private rides on the 12go website.

10 Days Sri Lanka Travel Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Colombo and Head to Hikkaduwa or Weligama Beach

  • Land at Bandaranaike International Airport and drive straight to the southern coastline (approximately 3-4 hours by private car or taxi booked via Uber or PickMe ride-sharing app). You could get to the main train station in Colombo – Colombo Fort and take a train down to the beaches. That takes about 1.5-2 hours. Book your train ticket here.
  • Check in to your beachside accommodation in Hikkaduwa, Weligama or Mirissa. All three beaches are an excellent option for a beach break. Mirissa is probably the most famous one, while Hikkaduwa is closest to the town of Galle.
  • Spend the afternoon relaxing on the golden sands or try surfing as you can easily rent a surf or go snorkelling. Also, there are epic sunsets here.

Dinner: Enjoy fresh seafood at Seas Salt Society in Hikkaduwa or try typical Sri Lankan curry at Canal View. If you stay at Weligama, eat lunch at Dulnetha and great Italian pizza for something special at Pizza Hub.

Day 2: Explore Galle Fort

  • Take a local train or private car to Galle (30 minutes from Hikkaduwa or Weligama).
  • Wander through the cobblestone streets of Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Walk along the fort’s ramparts for stunning ocean views and explore iconic landmarks like the Dutch Reformed Church.

Lunch or Dinner: Enjoy fusion cuisine at The Tuna & The Crab, located within Galle Fort.

Day 3: Journey to Ella

  • Leave the beach behind are head inland. You can either book a private transfer which will be the fastest and most comfortable way to get to Ella, around 3 hours. Or take a public bus/tuk tuk to Galle main bus station and take the public bus to Ella.
  • If you’re renting a car in Sri Lanka, stop at Ravana Falls en route for a refreshing dip.
  • Check-in at your accommodation in Ella (here are your options) and hike to Little Adam’s Peak for panoramic views of lush tea plantations at sunset.

Dinner: Have a hearty Sri Lankan meal at Chill Café in Ella, a popular spot for travellers or enjoy a wood-fired pizza at The Barn, I recommend it!

The food at Matey Hut is the best!

Day 5: Scenic Train Ride to Nuwara Eliya
